CPCCDE3016  – The New SafeWork NSW

Demolition Requirement You Can’t Ignore

Major Changes Coming March 1, 2025 – Are You Ready?

If you work in demolition in New South Wales, the clock is ticking. From March 1, 2025, a major industry change takes effect: CPCCDE3016 – Identify Hazards and Assess Risks in Demolition Work will become mandatory for most workers on NSW demolition sites. This requirement, enforced by SafeWork NSW, ensures that demolition workers understand how to identify risks, assess hazards, and implement safety measures on high-risk job sites.

If you don’t have CPCCDE3016 certification by the deadline, you won’t be allowed on-site unless you meet one of the limited exceptions. Let’s break down what this means for workers, employers, and the NSW demolition industry.

Who Needs CPCCDE3016 Certification?

From March 1, 2025, all demolition workers in NSW must complete CPCCDE3016 unless they fall into one of these two exceptions:

  • truck drivers transporting demolition waste from the site who always remain in the cabin

  • persons always accompanied by a named supervisor eg. engineers or people who are not undertaking licensed demolition works but are required to access the site i.e. to provide advice

For everyone else, CPCCDE3016 is now a non-negotiable requirement to work on demolition projects. If you already have your CPCCWHS2001 White Card, you must now take the next step to ensure compliance with NSW’s new WHS regulations.

Why is CPCCDE3016 Now Mandatory?

Demolition work is one of the highest-risk sectors in construction. Unsafe practices lead to fatalities, serious injuries, and legal consequences. SafeWork NSW has introduced this requirement to reduce accidents and ensure that every demolition worker has the right risk assessment and hazard identification skills before stepping onto a site.

CPCCDE3016 training ensures that workers understand:

  • How to assess and mitigate risks in demolition work

  • The dangers of asbestos and hazardous materials

  • Structural instability risks and how to manage them

  • Safe demolition sequencing and exclusion zones

  • WHS documentation and reporting requirements

Without this training, workers may unknowingly put themselves, their colleagues, and the public at risk.

The Risks of Non-Compliance

Failing to meet SafeWork NSW’s March 1, 2025, deadline could have serious consequences, including:

  • Loss of work opportunities – No CPCCDE3016 certification means no site access for most demolition roles.

  • Fines and penalties – Non-compliant businesses could face SafeWork NSW enforcement actions.

  • Increased safety risks – Workers without formal risk assessment training may be more likely to cause accidents, injuries, and structural failures.

  • Project delays – Employers that don’t prepare now could struggle to find qualified workers, delaying projects and increasing costs.
